Varanasi, India

Varanasi - Synonomous with Hindu beliefs and the Ganges River. An ancient city that, is as connected to death as it is to life. A riot of activity, boats full of devotees heading to the bathing ghats, snake charmers and their dancing cobras, women drying saris in the breeze blowing off the sacred river, sadhus wandering amongst the sellers and tourists, cows forever in the way and a mass of humanity making their way to the holy Mother Ganga. Colours like exotic birds intermingling on the steps of this ancient town. Muted light in the early morning and vibrant from then on.

I spent 3 days in Varanasi in February 2013 on my way to Allahabad where the world's largest ever gathering of humanity took place at the Kumbh Mela.
